Church Lady Cocoa Mix!

From the Alta United Methodist Women's Cookbook 1993

1 (8qt) box of Carnation instant (powdered) milk
1 6oz jar of coffee creamer
1 16oz box of Nestle's Quick
2 cups powdered sugar

Mix all ingredients together. Use 1/3 to 1/4 cup powdered mix for each cup of hot water. TOUCH OF FANCY: top with mini marshmallows or whipped cream with Chocolate or Cinnamon sprinkled on top.

Shortly before stepping up to the starting block, the University of Texas senior leaned down to stretch and his suit tore.

"I kind of freaked out for just a second," Berens said. "I felt like [the hole] was almost down to my knees. I felt like I was putting on a pretty good show."

He did. And the US qualified for finals and won.

“These paintings have a lot to do with the city’s architecture and how diverse it is,” Lew says. So the media is making last night's American Idol vote in to a Red State / Blue State issue which I'm sorry to say is bullshit. Kris Allen deserved to win just as much as Adam Lambert. Non-news stories make me crazy!!!

I'm sure Adam will be wildly successful as well, so let's not make this a "America hates gays" thing.

Grey Gardens Mini-Review

Oh hi.

Thanks to the good people at Entertainment Weekly I got to go to a special sneak peak tonight.

SPOILER ALERT!

I'm a proud geek about all things Beales and Grey Gardens related.

And I have to say that I was very satisfied. There was no new information for me, but a lot of wonderful scenes that connect the dots for us and let us see pivotal moments in the Beale women's lives.

It still is trying very hard to answer the question posed by the documentary "How on earth could this happen?" Trying to answer that question is the chief problem with the Broadway show. And let me just say as much as I liked Grey Gardens: The Musical - this was a lot more on track for me. There was no queer sense of this all coming together on one magical/tragic afternoon. We get a full progression of high-life to squalor here - and it all makes sense. Although I still maintain that the magic of the documentary is that it just doesn't make sense - it doesn't need to in my opinion.

I had a great time reading the HBO website and all of the amazing research they did putting it together. I really feel that the design of the HBO film is amazing. One thing I've always wanted after seeing both of the Mayles' documentaries was a better sense of the floor plan of the home. The HBO film gives you a wonderful sense of the actual layout of the home. It was awesome. But the landscape around the HBO home? all wrong. It makes it seem like Lily Pond Lane is in the middle of the woods or something. It is not.

Jessica Lange is unreal - so effing good. Just hand her the Emmy and Golden Globe now. She found tiny nuances in Big Edie that she added throughout her performance. My favorite was the wicked little giggle and smile that she had down perfect.

It was great to see Phelan. And Buddy and Phelan, Jr. There's no Lois - no Jerry. Lots and lots of cats.

I liked Malcolm Gets as Gould - and bought this take on the Gould/Big Edie relationship much more than the grody/Cole Porter-wannabe character we get in the musical

A little correction - maybe a jab at the musical when they talk about how she and Joe Kennedy barely knew each other.

Instead we get to see her relationship with Cap - the married man Little Edie slept with while pursuing her acting career, played by Daniel Baldwin.

The scene with Jackie O was kinda cool. Although I don't remember Jackie's thighs ever being so meaty. Sorry Jeanne.

The make-up and costumes were amazing.

Drew, Drew, Drew - like most people I've seen try "to do" Little Edie - she was just a little off. Its hard - cause she's so Drew Barrymore - its tough to see her as another REAL person. But she does alright - and serves the story ok. She's ok. Again - Jessica is AMAZING.

I was very emotional when we saw the scenes about the raid that the Suffolk County Board of Health led. I had read that the women were deeply scarred by the event - so I was a little worked up watching this scene.

Favorite thing: The end credits showing Little Edie's cabaret show at Reno Sweeney. I've always dreamed that someone had a bootleg of that - or wished I could go back in time to see her finally be a star. So we get a little piece of it - and it is wonderful. Loved it - and I want those shoes.

Oh my God. This was, um. This was not an easy film to make. First off, I have to thank Cleve Jones and Anne Kronenberg and all the real-life people who shared their stories with me. And, um, Gus Van Sant, Sean Penn, Emile Hirsch, Josh Brolin, James Franco, and our entire cast, my producers, Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen, everyone at Groundswell and Focus, for taking on the challenge of telling this life-saving story. When I was 13 years old, my beautiful mother and my father moved me from a conservative Mormon home in San Antonio, Texas to California and I heard the story of Harvey Milk. And it gave me hope. It gave me the hope to live my life, it gave me the hope to one day live my life openly as who I am and that maybe even I could fall in love and one day get married.

I want to thank my mom who has always loved me for who I am, even when there was pressure not to. But most of all, if Harvey had not been taken from us 30 years ago, I think he’d want me to say to all of the gay and lesbian kids out there tonight who have been told that they are less than by their churches or by the government or by their families that you are beautiful, wonderful creatures of value and that no matter what anyone tells you, God does love you and that very soon, I promise you, you will have equal rights, federally, across this great nation of ours. (Wild applause from the audience.) Thank you, thank you, and thank you God for giving us Harvey Milk.

So all of this talk about Antony and the Johnsons must have brought them here to Chicago. I got a call from the Bean just now asking me if I want to go see their concert tonight. I had no idea they were even in town...
There are still tickets available ($30, general admission) at ticketmaster.
They are playing at The Vic (3145 N. Sheffield, Chicago)
Doors open at 6:30 for a 7:30 show.

I'll be there! I can't wait!

Just Stunning: Antony & The Johnsons, "The Crying Light"

So, I know that Antony & The Johnsons is not for everyone, but their new album "The Crying Light" is just absolutely stunning. Thanks to our dear listener Mark who gifted it to me on iTunes (thanks so much!!!).
I know the cover art is a little freaky... but, if I may make one suggestion, if you don't want to buy the whole album. Buy the song "Everglade" it is well worth the $.99. It is my favorite right now... it moved me as I was walking home in the rain tonight. Here's the iTunes link
